Actually, there is a path that will enable you to do that. That path includes upgrading to Lightroom 5. Production for Lightroom 3 ended long before your camera existed. If you don't want to upgrade then you'll have to use the DNG converter. It's not that much "longer" actually, you just convert as you download from your camera. Once the conversion is done it's Lightroom business as usual.
